The Time We Hung Out With Monkeys (Costa Rican Honeymoon Part III)

Our next (and final) stop was Manuel Antonio, a town on the Pacific coast known for a national park with gorgeous beaches and an abundance of wildlife. As the drive to MA from Monteverde takes around 4 hours, we decided to splurge and hire a private driver, which was highly recommended by previous travelers. Carlos picked us up bright and early and was eager to share interesting facts and information about his country which just enhanced the beautiful drive.

Carlos and our awesome ride:

The Time We Ran From a Tarantula (Costa Rican Honeymoon Part II)

After two fantastic days in Arenal, it was time to head to Monteverde. Always adventurous, we opted to take a boat-horse-taxi transfer. A group of tourists crosses Lake Arenal, boards horses and rides partway to Monteverde, then get picked up by a taxi for the rest of the trip. Pretty easy. At least, that was what we were told...

The day started out well. We got picked up by a driver from our hotel early in the morning. He headed towards the lake. So far, so good. Once at the lake, he pulls over on the side of the road and says, "Here we are." Um, where are we? So we get out, grab our stuff, and the driver hands us a bag with water bottles and a pineapple. He points down a dirt hill saying, "Your boat is down there." There are about six boats pulled up on the dirt embankment. Um, which one? We set off down the path and a boat captain waved us down. He points to his boat and tosses our stuff in. We're the only people there. Um, where is everyone else? Turns out we were just the first of the group to arrive. So we waited at the "dock".

The Time We Climbed a Volcano (Costa Rican Honeymoon Part I)

For our honeymoon, we decided to go to Costa Rica. Not to relax at an all-inclusive... oh no, that's not our style. Instead we spent 10 days hiking through mud, climbing volcanoes, and trying to convince monkeys to come home with us. (We didn't get any takers.)

First up: A stay at the Pacuare Jungle Lodge - a hotel only accessible via a river full of rapids. And people pay good money to trust a wrestler-sized Tico to guide their belongings down the river on a raft. But what do you get in return? Rollercoaster-type rides through Class II, III and IV rapids. Breathtaking views of gorges in the rain forest. Your own personal thatch hut of much luxuriousness. (No, seriously.) Gourmet meals served by candlelight under the stars.
