An Apple A Day...

One of my goals since moving to the Midwest has been to pick an apple off a tree.  Sounds pretty silly, I know, but A went along with it and we headed to a well-known orchard.  We drove south of the city to Indiana to the County Line Orchard.  This orchard is so popular, you have to park off the property and take a bus in!

Along with apples, they had a house made of pumpkins!

They had bunches of pumpkins, and also some strangely shaped gourds.

After checking things out, it was time to head out to the fields and pick some apples!  We elected to walk instead of riding behind the tractor.

They were running low on apples as it was towards the end of the season, so we had to reach high!

The type of apple that was most unpopular available that day was Suncrisp.  Small, green apples that are a great blend of tart and sweet.

We searched high and low (literally!) for the quintessential red apple, but were foiled until we stumbled upon some Gala trees far away from the crowd.

They had boxes of apples that had been pre-picked, but we felt that was cheating.

The orchard is famous for Peter the pumpkin-eating dinosaur.  Clearly we had to see his show.  In retrospect, it would have been better to spend the 10 minutes elsewhere.  But the kids certainly found him amusing.

Next and last stop: the big red barn.  We shared a cider slushie (apple juice in slurpee form) and decided the cider was worth buying.  Yum!

We definitely probably won't return to the County Line Orchard next year, but we'll probably pick apples again!
